Camping With Dogs on California Beaches

Most articles bury the real story: your dog can camp at nearly every drive-in site in the California state beach system. That part is easy. What nobody tells you is that the trip hinges on the walk down to the water, since the majority of state beaches ban dogs from the sand outright.

Which means the whole game is finding the campground attached to a beach that actually allows your dog. Only a few exist. And they fill up fast because of it.

The short list: campgrounds where your dog can join you on the sand

  • Leo Carrillo SP (Malibu). North Beach, the stretch north of Lifeguard Tower 3, welcomes leashed dogs. South Beach and the trails do not.
  • Point Mugu SP (Malibu/Ventura). Leashed dogs can roam the beach here, including Thornhill Broome, where campsites sit right on the sand. The backcountry trails stay off limits.
  • New Brighton SB (Santa Cruz). Few state beaches let a leashed dog walk the sand. This is one of them. Santa Cruz County parks, as a rule, lean unusually dog friendly.
  • San Elijo SB (San Diego County). Head south of Lifeguard Tower 16 and your dog is welcome on the sand, a short stroll from the campground.

Worth mentioning even though it sits off this list: Pismo State Beach and Oceano Dunes let dogs into the campground, onto the trails and onto the sand. Nowhere else in the state system comes close to that level of access.

The rules that apply everywhere

  • Six feet of leash, maximum. Keep your dog with you at all times.
  • At night, your dog sleeps in your tent or your vehicle. Never tied up outside.
  • Service animals skip the beach and trail restrictions entirely.
  • Policies shift. Trust the park’s own page and the entrance kiosk above anything else.

The hard part is not the rules, it is getting a site

Those four sand friendly campgrounds sell out the morning their booking window opens. Every time. Our beach availability data ranks the Malibu parks among the toughest reservations on the coast. Cancellations, though, happen constantly, and a freed up site goes to whoever hears about it first.

That is exactly what CampsiteScan is built for. Choose the campground, and we text or email you the moment a site opens for your dates. One campground is free; Pro watches up to 6, checked every 5 minutes.
