New Brighton State Beach Camping: How Hard Is It to Book?

New Brighton sits in the trees on a bluff above a long beach at Capitola, on the north curve of Monterey Bay. It is the Bay Area's favourite beach campground, and our alert data says it is the most contested camping in the Santa Cruz area. The numbers below show why the weekends vanish.

Weekends versus midweek

Every single Friday and Saturday night in the window was gone. All 6 of them, with all 100 sites taken. If you are set on a weekend at New Brighton and you have not already booked it, there is nothing to buy and no amount of refreshing changes that.

Midweek is measurably easier. 3 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 12 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here.

Why New Brighton books out the way it does

New Brighton is where the Bay Area goes to camp on the ocean, and the Bay Area is a lot of people.

It is the closest real beach camping to millions. San Jose is under an hour away over the hill, San Francisco not much more. For that entire population, New Brighton is the shortest drive to waking up above the sand, and the campground is not large.

The setting beats the postcard. The sites sit in a shaded forest on the bluff, cool on hot valley days, with a walk down to a beach that runs for miles toward the Capitola wharf. Capitola village, one of the most photographed beach towns in the state, is a stroll along the sand away.

Summer fog does not slow it down. Mornings here are often grey in July and August and the campground sells out anyway, because escaping inland heat is half the reason people come. Demand is driven by the temperature in San Jose as much as the sun in Capitola.

So the weekends go months ahead, and what comes back comes back as cancellations at random hours. Our own users watch this campground more than any other in the Santa Cruz area, which tells you both how hard it is and what the people who eventually get in are doing.

How New Brighton compares to the rest of the California coast

This is the part a booking site will not tell you. All 36 campgrounds below are on the California coast and were measured over the same nights, so this is a fair comparison rather than a marketing claim. Hardest at the top.

Weekend and midweek are counted separately on purpose, because two campgrounds can lose the same number of nights and still be nothing alike. One that loses every Friday and Saturday but stays open midweek is bookable if you can move your dates. One that loses the same total spread evenly is not.

Measured over the same window for every row: 21 nights from 11 September to 1 October 2026. Campgrounds the booking system returned no availability data for at all are left out rather than published as sold out, because those two things are not the same and we cannot tell them apart from the outside.

What to book instead

In the same comparison, Hearst San Simeon SP, Silver Strand SB, Salt Point SP and Sue-meg SP all rated moderate or low over the same nights. Every one of them is further from the Bay Area, which is why they have room. If the trip is about camping over Monterey Bay rather than Capitola specifically, one of those gets you to the ocean this year instead of next.

How to actually get a site here

1. Book the morning the window opens

Every reservable site at New Brighton is released on a rolling schedule months ahead on its ReserveCalifornia page, and at a campground rated High the good dates go in the first minutes. Check the release time on that page, be signed in before it, and know which site numbers you want. This is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.

2. Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it

Once the release date has passed, cancellations are the whole game. People cancel constantly: plans change, weather turns, holds expire without payment. Each one puts a site back into the system at whatever hour it happens, and at New Brighton it is usually gone again within minutes. Refreshing the page yourself only works if you happen to be looking at the moment it appears, which is why we watch it for you and email the moment something frees up.

3. Move the trip to a Monday

Midweek is measurably easier. 3 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 12 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here. If your dates can shift, shifting them is worth more than any booking trick.

4. Take a campground nobody is fighting over

The table above is sorted for exactly this. The campgrounds at the bottom of it are on the California coast, measured over the same nights, and several of them had room on most nights we checked.

Practical details

• Where it is: in Capitola, just south of Santa Cruz off Highway 1, on the bluff at the north end of Monterey Bay.
• The layout: forested sites on the bluff, with a path down to the beach. More shade and more shelter than most beach campgrounds.
• The walk: the beach runs to the Capitola wharf and village, an easy stroll on the sand at most tides.
• The weather: expect grey summer mornings that burn off by afternoon. Bring a layer; this is Northern California ocean camping.
• Booking: ReserveCalifornia, six months ahead. Summer weekends are release-morning bookings, and midweek is measurably easier here.

How this changes through the year

We started keeping a daily record of how booked out each campground is in August 2026, so only the current season has enough days behind it to average. The other three fill in as the year goes round. We deliberately do not guess at them from future availability: a date five months out looks wide open because nobody has booked it yet, not because it is easy to get, and treating that as data would make winter look like the easiest season every single time.
