Crystal Cove Camping: How Hard Is It to Book?

Moro Campground is the camping at Crystal Cove: terraced rows on a bluff between Laguna Beach and Newport Coast, with the ocean filling the view from most sites. It is the only drive-in campground on one of the most expensive coastlines in America, and it books accordingly.

Weekends versus midweek

Every single Friday and Saturday night in the window was gone. All 6 of them, with all 50 sites taken. If you are set on a weekend at Moro Campground and you have not already booked it, there is nothing to buy and no amount of refreshing changes that.

Midweek is measurably easier. 9 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 6 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here.

Why Moro Campground books out the way it does

Moro is scarce in a way that money usually solves and here does not.

It is the only campground on this stretch. The coast between Newport and Laguna is otherwise gated communities and billion dollar views. Moro's bluff is the one place on it where a tent is legal, which means it collects all of the demand for an entire coastline by itself.

The views do the selling. The campground is terraced up the hillside above the highway, so most sites look straight out at the water and Catalina on a clear day. Photos of that view circulate the same way Refugio's palms do, and they convert into six-months-out bookings the same way too.

Orange County again. Like Doheny down the coast, Moro serves a county of three million with a campground measured in dozens of sites. Weekends go the morning they are released, and summer weeks go nearly as fast.

Cancellations are the back door, as everywhere on this list. High demand plus long lead times means a steady trickle of returned sites at random hours, each gone again in minutes. The people who camp here on short notice are the ones who were told the moment a site came back.

How Moro Campground compares to the rest of the California coast

This is the part a booking site will not tell you. All 36 campgrounds below are on the California coast and were measured over the same nights, so this is a fair comparison rather than a marketing claim. Hardest at the top.

Weekend and midweek are counted separately on purpose, because two campgrounds can lose the same number of nights and still be nothing alike. One that loses every Friday and Saturday but stays open midweek is bookable if you can move your dates. One that loses the same total spread evenly is not.

Measured over the same window for every row: 21 nights from 11 September to 1 October 2026. Campgrounds the booking system returned no availability data for at all are left out rather than published as sold out, because those two things are not the same and we cannot tell them apart from the outside.

What to book instead

In the same comparison, Hearst San Simeon SP, Silver Strand SB, Salt Point SP and Sue-meg SP all rated moderate or low over the same nights. None of them sit above Crystal Cove, but all of them are bookable sooner. If the trip is about an ocean view from the tent rather than this coastline specifically, one of those gets you there this year instead of next.

How to actually get a site here

1. Book the morning the window opens

Every reservable site at Moro Campground is released on a rolling schedule months ahead on its ReserveCalifornia page, and at a campground rated Extreme the good dates go in the first minutes. Check the release time on that page, be signed in before it, and know which site numbers you want. This is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.

2. Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it

Once the release date has passed, cancellations are the whole game. People cancel constantly: plans change, weather turns, holds expire without payment. Each one puts a site back into the system at whatever hour it happens, and at Moro Campground it is usually gone again within minutes. Refreshing the page yourself only works if you happen to be looking at the moment it appears, which is why we watch it for you and email the moment something frees up.

3. Move the trip to a Monday

Midweek is measurably easier. 9 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 6 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here. If your dates can shift, shifting them is worth more than any booking trick.

4. Take a campground nobody is fighting over

The table above is sorted for exactly this. The campgrounds at the bottom of it are on the California coast, measured over the same nights, and several of them had room on most nights we checked.

Practical details

• Where it is: off Pacific Coast Highway between Laguna Beach and Newport Coast, on the inland bluff above the highway.
• The layout: terraced rows up the hillside. Most sites have an ocean view; the beach itself is across the highway through an underpass, a longer walk than at most beach campgrounds.
• The park behind it: Moro Canyon's trail network starts at the campground, miles of hiking and mountain biking in the hills most visitors never touch.
• Not the cottages: the historic beach cottages at Crystal Cove are a separate booking with their own famous waiting game. This page is about the campground.

How this changes through the year

We started keeping a daily record of how booked out each campground is in August 2026, so only the current season has enough days behind it to average. The other three fill in as the year goes round. We deliberately do not guess at them from future availability: a date five months out looks wide open because nobody has booked it yet, not because it is easy to get, and treating that as data would make winter look like the easiest season every single time.
