San Elijo State Beach Camping: How Hard Is It to Book?

San Elijo sits on the bluff above the surf in Cardiff, in the middle of Encinitas. You can walk from your tent to a taco shop, watch the break from your camp chair, and take stairs down to the sand. It is one of the most fought-over reservations in the state park system, and the numbers below show what that looks like from the outside.

Weekends versus midweek

Every single Friday and Saturday night in the window was gone. All 6 of them, with all 145 sites taken. If you are set on a weekend at San Elijo and you have not already booked it, there is nothing to buy and no amount of refreshing changes that.

Midweek is measurably easier. 9 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 6 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here.

Why San Elijo books out the way it does

San Elijo is hard for reasons that have nothing to do with luck.

It is a beach campground inside a town. Most coastal camping in California puts you an hour or more from the nearest espresso. San Elijo puts you on a bluff in Cardiff with Encinitas across the road. Families can camp for a week without the trip ever feeling remote, which is exactly what a lot of families want, and there are only so many bluff-top sites to hand out.

San Diego wants it and so does everyone else. The parks of North County absorb demand from the whole southern half of the state. In our own alert data, San Elijo and its neighbours South Carlsbad and San Onofre are the campgrounds people set the most watches on, out of more than six hundred we cover.

Summer weekends go the morning they open. ReserveCalifornia releases dates six months ahead, and the ocean-side rows here are claimed in the first minutes. By the time most people start planning a summer trip, the season is already sold and the only inventory left is what other people give back.

That last part is the useful part. A campground this booked also produces a steady stream of cancellations, because plans made six months out fall apart at a high rate. The sites come back. They come back at random hours and go again fast.

How San Elijo compares to the rest of the California coast

This is the part a booking site will not tell you. All 36 campgrounds below are on the California coast and were measured over the same nights, so this is a fair comparison rather than a marketing claim. Hardest at the top.

Weekend and midweek are counted separately on purpose, because two campgrounds can lose the same number of nights and still be nothing alike. One that loses every Friday and Saturday but stays open midweek is bookable if you can move your dates. One that loses the same total spread evenly is not.

Measured over the same window for every row: 21 nights from 11 September to 1 October 2026. Campgrounds the booking system returned no availability data for at all are left out rather than published as sold out, because those two things are not the same and we cannot tell them apart from the outside.

What to book instead

In the same comparison, Hearst San Simeon SP, Silver Strand SB, Salt Point SP and Sue-meg SP all rated moderate or low over the same nights. Every one of them is further from a big city, and that is the whole difference. If the trip is about camping above the ocean rather than about Cardiff specifically, one of those gets you on the coast this year instead of next.

How to actually get a site here

1. Book the morning the window opens

Every reservable site at San Elijo is released on a rolling schedule months ahead on its ReserveCalifornia page, and at a campground rated Extreme the good dates go in the first minutes. Check the release time on that page, be signed in before it, and know which site numbers you want. This is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.

2. Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it

Once the release date has passed, cancellations are the whole game. People cancel constantly: plans change, weather turns, holds expire without payment. Each one puts a site back into the system at whatever hour it happens, and at San Elijo it is usually gone again within minutes. Refreshing the page yourself only works if you happen to be looking at the moment it appears, which is why we watch it for you and email the moment something frees up.

3. Move the trip to a Monday

Midweek is measurably easier. 9 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 6 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here. If your dates can shift, shifting them is worth more than any booking trick.

4. Take a campground nobody is fighting over

The table above is sorted for exactly this. The campgrounds at the bottom of it are on the California coast, measured over the same nights, and several of them had room on most nights we checked.

Practical details

• Where it is: the bluff above the beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, along Highway 101 in Encinitas, about 25 miles north of San Diego.
• The layout: a long strip of sites on the bluff edge, with stairs down to the sand. Ocean-side rows face the water; the inland rows are steps behind them.
• The train: the coastal rail line runs close by, and you will hear it. Regulars stop noticing by the second night.
• Surf: the reef breaks of Cardiff are directly below the campground, which is a lot of the reason the ocean rows sell first.
• Booking: ReserveCalifornia, six months ahead. Summer weekends need the first-morning approach or a cancellation alert.

How this changes through the year

We started keeping a daily record of how booked out each campground is in August 2026, so only the current season has enough days behind it to average. The other three fill in as the year goes round. We deliberately do not guess at them from future availability: a date five months out looks wide open because nobody has booked it yet, not because it is easy to get, and treating that as data would make winter look like the easiest season every single time.
