Point Mugu Camping: How Hard Is It to Book?

Point Mugu, at the quiet end of the Malibu coast, is really two campgrounds: Sycamore Canyon in the shade of the canyon, and Thornhill Broome, where the sites are on the beach itself. Camping on actual sand is nearly extinct in California, and the numbers below show what that scarcity does to a reservation.

Weekends versus midweek

Every single Friday and Saturday night in the window was gone. All 6 of them, with all 83 sites taken. If you are set on a weekend at Point Mugu and you have not already booked it, there is nothing to buy and no amount of refreshing changes that.

Midweek is measurably easier. 1 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 14 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here.

Why Point Mugu books out the way it does

Point Mugu carries two different kinds of demand at once.

Thornhill Broome is the rarity. A row of sites on the sand between the highway and the water, where the tent faces the surf and nothing stands between you and it. Almost nowhere else in the state can you drive to a legal campsite on the beach itself. People who want exactly that have very few alternatives, so this stretch books on scarcity alone.

Sycamore Canyon is the comfortable one. Across the highway, the canyon campground has shade, shelter from the wind and the trailhead into the biggest backcountry in the Santa Monica Mountains. It draws the same Los Angeles weekend crowd that fills Leo Carrillo down the road, and it fills the same way: weekends first, months ahead.

Los Angeles is an hour away. Like the rest of the Malibu coast, the park serves a metro area of ten million with a few hundred campsites. Our data puts the Malibu parks among the hardest bookings on the entire coast, and Point Mugu is part of that wall.

The way in is the same as everywhere on this coast: the release morning six months out, or the cancellation churn afterwards. Beach-row sites at Thornhill Broome churn like everything else. They just get taken back faster.

How Point Mugu compares to the rest of the California coast

This is the part a booking site will not tell you. All 36 campgrounds below are on the California coast and were measured over the same nights, so this is a fair comparison rather than a marketing claim. Hardest at the top.

Weekend and midweek are counted separately on purpose, because two campgrounds can lose the same number of nights and still be nothing alike. One that loses every Friday and Saturday but stays open midweek is bookable if you can move your dates. One that loses the same total spread evenly is not.

Measured over the same window for every row: 21 nights from 11 September to 1 October 2026. Campgrounds the booking system returned no availability data for at all are left out rather than published as sold out, because those two things are not the same and we cannot tell them apart from the outside.

What to book instead

In the same comparison, Hearst San Simeon SP, Silver Strand SB, Salt Point SP and Sue-meg SP all rated moderate or low over the same nights. None of them let you pitch a tent on the sand the way Thornhill Broome does, but all of them are bookable sooner. If the dates matter more than the camping-on-the-beach part, one of those is the faster route to the ocean.

How to actually get a site here

1. Book the morning the window opens

Every reservable site at Point Mugu is released on a rolling schedule months ahead on its ReserveCalifornia page, and at a campground rated High the good dates go in the first minutes. Check the release time on that page, be signed in before it, and know which site numbers you want. This is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.

2. Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it

Once the release date has passed, cancellations are the whole game. People cancel constantly: plans change, weather turns, holds expire without payment. Each one puts a site back into the system at whatever hour it happens, and at Point Mugu it is usually gone again within minutes. Refreshing the page yourself only works if you happen to be looking at the moment it appears, which is why we watch it for you and email the moment something frees up.

3. Move the trip to a Monday

Midweek is measurably easier. 1 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 14 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here. If your dates can shift, shifting them is worth more than any booking trick.

4. Take a campground nobody is fighting over

The table above is sorted for exactly this. The campgrounds at the bottom of it are on the California coast, measured over the same nights, and several of them had room on most nights we checked.

Practical details

• Where it is: on Pacific Coast Highway at the Ventura County end of the Malibu coast, about an hour from central Los Angeles.
• Thornhill Broome: sites directly on the sand along the highway. No shade, steady wind most afternoons, and the ocean a few steps from the tent. Stake everything well.
• Sycamore Canyon: the sheltered campground across the highway, under big sycamores, with the Big Sycamore Canyon trail leaving from the back of the loop into the mountains.
• Which to pick: Thornhill Broome for the experience, Sycamore for comfort and shade. Families with small tents and light sleepers usually regret the wind less in the canyon.
• Booking: ReserveCalifornia, six months ahead. The two campgrounds are separate choices in the booking flow, and in our checks their availability moves differently, so look at both.

How this changes through the year

We started keeping a daily record of how booked out each campground is in August 2026, so only the current season has enough days behind it to average. The other three fill in as the year goes round. We deliberately do not guess at them from future availability: a date five months out looks wide open because nobody has booked it yet, not because it is easy to get, and treating that as data would make winter look like the easiest season every single time.
