Doheny State Beach Camping: How Hard Is It to Book?

Doheny was California's first state beach, and it is still one of the few places in Orange County where you can sleep next to the sand. A small campground, a gentle beach and three million neighbours make for exactly the reservation problem the numbers below describe.

Weekends versus midweek

Every single Friday and Saturday night in the window was gone. All 6 of them, with all 107 sites taken. If you are set on a weekend at Doheny and you have not already booked it, there is nothing to buy and no amount of refreshing changes that.

Midweek is measurably easier. 1 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 14 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here.

Why Doheny books out the way it does

Doheny's problem is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is brutal.

Orange County has almost no coastal camping. Three million people live in the county, and the campgrounds that put a tent near the sand can be counted on one hand. Doheny is the friendliest of them, which makes it the default choice for every family within an hour's drive.

The beach suits exactly the people who book early. The break here is small and slow, famous as a beginner longboard wave, and the water is as calm as Orange County gets. Families with young kids plan months ahead, and families with young kids are precisely who this beach serves best. The beachfront row goes the morning it is released.

Dana Point Harbor is next door. Walkable food, bike paths and the harbor mean a Doheny weekend needs no driving once you have parked, which broadens the audience past campers to anyone who wants a cheap oceanfront weekend.

The route in, once the release mornings are gone, is the same as at every campground this contested: cancellations, caught fast. Family plans made six months out fall apart constantly, and each one puts a site back for a few minutes. Being told the moment it happens is the difference.

How Doheny compares to the rest of the California coast

This is the part a booking site will not tell you. All 36 campgrounds below are on the California coast and were measured over the same nights, so this is a fair comparison rather than a marketing claim. Hardest at the top.

Weekend and midweek are counted separately on purpose, because two campgrounds can lose the same number of nights and still be nothing alike. One that loses every Friday and Saturday but stays open midweek is bookable if you can move your dates. One that loses the same total spread evenly is not.

Measured over the same window for every row: 21 nights from 11 September to 1 October 2026. Campgrounds the booking system returned no availability data for at all are left out rather than published as sold out, because those two things are not the same and we cannot tell them apart from the outside.

What to book instead

In the same comparison, Hearst San Simeon SP, Silver Strand SB, Salt Point SP and Sue-meg SP all rated moderate or low over the same nights. Every one of them is further from Orange County, which is the whole reason they have room. If the trip is about a calm beach with kids rather than about Dana Point specifically, one of those gets you there this year instead of next.

How to actually get a site here

1. Book the morning the window opens

Every reservable site at Doheny is released on a rolling schedule months ahead on its ReserveCalifornia page, and at a campground rated High the good dates go in the first minutes. Check the release time on that page, be signed in before it, and know which site numbers you want. This is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.

2. Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it

Once the release date has passed, cancellations are the whole game. People cancel constantly: plans change, weather turns, holds expire without payment. Each one puts a site back into the system at whatever hour it happens, and at Doheny it is usually gone again within minutes. Refreshing the page yourself only works if you happen to be looking at the moment it appears, which is why we watch it for you and email the moment something frees up.

3. Move the trip to a Monday

Midweek is measurably easier. 1 of 15 midweek nights were fully booked against 6 of 6 at the weekend, so there were 14 midweek nights with something free. Shifting a trip off Friday and Saturday is the single biggest thing you can do here. If your dates can shift, shifting them is worth more than any booking trick.

4. Take a campground nobody is fighting over

The table above is sorted for exactly this. The campgrounds at the bottom of it are on the California coast, measured over the same nights, and several of them had room on most nights we checked.

Practical details

• Where it is: in Dana Point at the mouth of San Juan Creek, next to Dana Point Harbor, off Pacific Coast Highway.
• The layout: a compact campground behind the beach, with a beachfront row that is the prize of the booking. Everything is a short, flat walk from the sand.
• The water: a gentle, slow break that suits beginners and small kids. Surf schools use it for a reason.
• Beyond the tent: the harbor, its restaurants and the creek bike path are walkable. This is the least remote camping on this site.
• Booking: ReserveCalifornia, six months ahead. Summer weekends and the beachfront row are release-morning bookings; everything after that is a cancellation hunt.

How this changes through the year

We started keeping a daily record of how booked out each campground is in August 2026, so only the current season has enough days behind it to average. The other three fill in as the year goes round. We deliberately do not guess at them from future availability: a date five months out looks wide open because nobody has booked it yet, not because it is easy to get, and treating that as data would make winter look like the easiest season every single time.
