Camping Two Hours of the Bay Area: What Open on a Saturday
The closer a campground sits to San Francisco, the slimmer your chance of a Saturday night, and the cutoff is sharp. Within roughly an hour of the city, nearly everything scores 100 on our sellout scale, meaning nothing bookable on any night over the next three weeks. Push the drive toward Santa Cruz, the Delta or the far side of Marin and room begins to appear. Distance drives the whole story here, so this page is organized around it.
Scores below were measured September 10 to 30, 2026, 21 nights. A score is the share of Friday and Saturday nights with nothing bookable, weighted 65%, plus midweek nights at 35%. 100 means nothing on any night. The live list is at [hardest campgrounds to book](https://campsitescan.com/hardest-campgrounds-to-book).
## The inner ring, where 100 means 100
Mount Tamalpais SP: 9 sites, score 100. [VERIFY: which Mount Tam campgrounds are on ReserveCalifornia (Pantoll, Bootjack, Steep Ravine) and whether all are in the 9] Fewest sites of any park on this page, so a single cancellation counts as an event.
Big Basin Redwoods SP: 93 sites, score 100. It also ranks among the parks our users watch most, with 6 active watches. [VERIFY: which Big Basin campgrounds are open and bookable during the post-fire rebuild]
Half Moon Bay SB: 95. Extreme, and the closest ocean campground to the city.
Angel Island SP: walk-in sites, reached by ferry. We have not rated it yet. Treat it like Mount Tam. [VERIFY: Angel Island site count, booking system and ferry logistics]
Manresa SB: 100. Walk-in tent sites on the bluff south of Santa Cruz.
That is the hard truth of the inner ring. A Saturday at Big Basin or Mount Tam on short notice is close to impossible by searching. The realistic routes are the 8am ReserveCalifornia release for dates six months out, and a cancellation alert for dates inside that window.
## The Santa Cruz coast, where it loosens
[New Brighton SB](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/new-brighton) (Capitola): High. Not 100. Cliffside sites over the bay, and the town is a walk away.
Sunset SB (south of Watsonville): Moderate. Sunset produced 16 alerts in our window, 10 of them from South Camp alone, which makes it the most active turnover campground within the Bay Area’s reach. Manresa sits next door and scores 100. Watch Sunset instead of Manresa.
Henry Cowell Redwoods SP (Felton): 7 alerts in our window. Old-growth redwoods without the Big Basin problem. We have not published a score for it.
The rule: the Santa Cruz side gives up Saturdays that Marin and the Peninsula will not. The drive from the city runs longer, the odds run far better.
## North and east, the open doors
Point Reyes: Low this autumn, room on nearly every night. The catch is that these are hike-in camps, so you carry everything from the trailhead. [VERIFY: Point Reyes camps are on recreation.gov; current hike-in distances and rules] For a lot of people that is the trade that makes a Saturday possible.
Sonoma Coast SP (Bodega Dunes, Wrights Beach): High. Salt Point SP, further up Highway 1: Low, but it sits past the two-hour line for most of the Bay Area.
Brannan Island SRA (the Delta, near Rio Vista): among our most-watched parks, with 7 watches, so people clearly want it. It is flat, on the water, and the drive is easy. [VERIFY: Brannan Island operator (concession) and booking path]
Folsom Lake SRA (Sacramento side): 6 watches. Over two hours in Friday traffic, and plenty of people do it anyway.
## When Saturdays come back
Across all the ReserveCalifornia parks we track, 83% of Friday and Saturday nights are sold out against 41% of midweek nights. Of the 329 alerts we sent between August 13 and September 10, 2026, 78% were for Friday or Saturday arrivals. Weekends are what people book and weekends are what they cancel.
Timing, from those alerts. 156 of 329 (47%) fired at 8am Pacific, the ReserveCalifornia daily release, when the date six months out opens and unpaid holds drop. The rest, the true cancellations, peaked on Tuesday (41) and Wednesday (40), and in the evening: 5pm (15) and 8pm (14) were the busiest hours. Friday was dead, 9 for the whole month.
Lead time: half of all caught sites (163) came back 3 to 6 days before arrival. Three quarters came back within a week. Set the watch on Monday for this Saturday and you are on time.
## What to do this week
Decide how far you will drive, then watch two parks at that distance. If the answer is under an hour, watch Mount Tam and Half Moon Bay and expect a wait. If you will make the Santa Cruz drive, watch Sunset and New Brighton and your odds change completely. Of the 63 scans people have asked us for, 34 wanted a Friday or Saturday arrival and 22 of those were Saturday, so you are not alone at the front of the line.
The free plan watches one campground. Pro scans an area and checks every 5 minutes. Bookings themselves go through [ReserveCalifornia](https://www.reservecalifornia.com/) for the state parks and recreation.gov for Point Reyes. We never book for you; you get the email and book it yourself.
Set a free alert on Sunset, New Brighton or Big Basin at [campsitescan.com](https://campsitescan.com/) and we email you the moment a site comes back.
