Most Popular California Campgrounds: Which Ones You Can Still Book
These are the campgrounds people compete for, across 6 parts of California. We check each one ourselves and the tables below show what was actually free the last time we looked, not what a listing site says should be there.
Of the 27 best-known campgrounds in California, 5 had nothing bookable on any night in the next three weeks and 8 still had room. Which group a campground falls into has far more to do with how far it sits from a city, and what month it is, than with how good it is.
Jumbo Rocks, Indian Cove, Black Rock and Anza-Borrego Desert were the easiest bookings on this list, with sites free on most nights we checked.

Seasons marked not yet are honest rather than broken. Our availability record starts in August 2026, so autumn is the only season with enough days behind it to average. Each remaining column fills in on its own as the year goes round. None free means we could not see a single bookable night, which is either genuinely sold out or closed for the season, and from outside the booking system those look identical. 5 campgrounds are in that state today.
What this tells you about timing
The desert is the season's loophole. Jumbo Rocks, Indian Cove and Black Rock were close to wide open while the coast and the mountains were full. Nobody wants Joshua Tree in high summer, which is exactly why you can have it. Go in the shoulder months and the same campgrounds are gone six months ahead.
The pattern underneath the whole page is distance. A campground within two hours of Los Angeles or the Bay Area is fighting the entire population of a metro area for a Saturday night. The same quality of campground four hours out is bookable most weeks. If your trip is about being outside rather than about one specific view, the tables above are a map of where to go instead.
What to do when the answer is none
Book the morning the window opens
Both booking systems release sites on a rolling schedule months ahead: ReserveCalifornia for the state parks and beaches, recreation.gov for the national parks and forests. For anything rated Extreme on this page, that release is the only route that reliably works, and it means deciding your dates roughly half a year out.
Wait for a cancellation, and be told about it
Everything here generates cancellations, and the busiest ones generate the most, because plans made six months ahead fall apart at a high rate. Sites come back at unpredictable hours and get taken again within minutes. That gap is the entire opportunity, and it is what we watch for.
Move the trip off Friday and Saturday
At most of these campgrounds the weekend is gone while midweek still has room. Our rating weights Friday and Saturday most heavily, because that is what people are trying to book, so a campground rated Extreme is often still bookable on a Tuesday. Shifting a trip off the weekend is worth more than any booking trick.
Common questions
Which California campgrounds are the hardest to book?
Of the 27 best-known campgrounds in California, 5 had nothing bookable on any night in the next three weeks and 8 still had room. Which group a campground falls into has far more to do with how far it sits from a city, and what month it is, than with how good it is.
Which California campgrounds still have availability?
Jumbo Rocks, Indian Cove, Black Rock and Anza-Borrego Desert were the easiest bookings on this list, with sites free on most nights we checked.
When is the best time to book a California campsite?
The desert is the season's loophole. Jumbo Rocks, Indian Cove and Black Rock were close to wide open while the coast and the mountains were full. Nobody wants Joshua Tree in high summer, which is exactly why you can have it. Go in the shoulder months and the same campgrounds are gone six months ahead.
Why does a campground show no availability at all?
It means one of two things and from outside the booking system they look identical: the campground is genuinely sold out, or it is closed, out of season, or not yet taking reservations for those dates. We label those None free rather than guessing which, because calling a closed desert campground the hardest booking in California would be wrong.
Is this every campground in California?
No, and it is not trying to be. We watch over 600 California campgrounds, and this page is a hand-picked list of the ones people actually search for and compete over. A full directory sorted by demand would be dominated by remote campgrounds that show no availability because they are closed, which is neither useful nor honest.
