A Saturday night within two hours of Los Angeles is the hardest campsite in California to land on short notice, and it is also the one that comes back most often. Both statements hold. Across every ReserveCalifornia park we track, 83% of Friday and Saturday nights are sold out, against 41% of midweek nights. But of the 329 alerts we sent between August 13 and September 10, 2026, the campgrounds around LA produced more than anywhere else in the state. San Onofre, Wheeler Gorge, Malibu Creek, Point Mugu and Leo Carrillo together sent more than a third of every alert we fired statewide.

That does not mean LA campers are flaky. These are the campgrounds people watch hardest, and the more people watching, the more cancellations get caught. It also means that if you want a Saturday near LA, waiting for a cancellation is a real plan, not a wish.

## Who you’re competing with

Of the 63 scans people have asked us to run, 34 wanted a Friday or Saturday arrival, and Saturday alone accounted for 22 of them. 52 of 63 wanted one or two nights. 51 of 63 set the watch less than a week before arrival. That is the LA camper in three numbers: Saturday, one night, decided on Monday.

The useful part is that cancellations run on the same clock. Three quarters of the sites we caught came back within a week of the arrival date. Half of them (163 of 329) came back 3 to 6 days out, and another 76 came back in the final two days. So a watch set on Monday for this Saturday is set at the right time. Setting it a month early does not hurt, but most of the action sits in the last week.

## The beach parks, ranked by how tight they are

Ratings below come from our sellout scores for September 10 to 30, 2026. Extreme means 85 or higher, nothing bookable on almost every night. Low means room on nearly every night. The live version is at [hardest campgrounds to book](https://campsitescan.com/hardest-campgrounds-to-book).

[Crystal Cove Moro](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/crystal-cove-moro) (Laguna Beach) scores 93, Extreme. It is the closest thing to a real beach campground Orange County has, and it behaves like one.

Bolsa Chica SB (Huntington Beach) is also Extreme, and it is a parking lot on the sand for self-contained RVs [VERIFY: Bolsa Chica is self-contained RV camping only, no tents]. Still sold out.

[Leo Carrillo](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/leo-carrillo) (Malibu, at the county line) is High. Canyon campground produced 10 alerts in our window, so it does turn over.

[Point Mugu](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/point-mugu) (Sycamore Canyon, north of Malibu) is High. 14 alerts.

[Doheny](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/doheny) (Dana Point) is High. San Clemente SB, a few exits north, is also High.

[Carpinteria](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/carpinteria) (just short of Santa Barbara, right at the two-hour edge on a good day) is Moderate.

[San Onofre](https://campsitescan.com/campgrounds/san-onofre) (San Clemente, the bluffs) is Moderate, and it is the single biggest alert source we have. 30 alerts from San Mateo campground, 9 more from bluff sites 68 to 100, and 10 from Bluff Camp. That is 49 alerts from one park. It is also the park our users watch most, with 12 watches.

Read the list as a rule. The closer to soft sand and a short freeway drive, the tighter it is. Carpinteria and San Onofre are the two beach parks inside the ring where a Saturday is genuinely findable. ## The two inland parks that turn over most

Malibu Creek SP (the Calabasas side of the Santa Monica Mountains) sent 18 alerts in four weeks, third most in the state. No beach, but a creek, oak shade, and the shortest drive on this page from most of LA. It is a ReserveCalifornia park, so it gets the 8am daily release on top of ordinary cancellations.

Wheeler Gorge (Los Padres National Forest, above Ojai) sent 28, second most in the state. It sits on recreation.gov, not ReserveCalifornia, so there is no 8am release. Why do these two turn over so much? They are plan B for beach people. Someone books Malibu Creek on Monday as a fallback, catches a Leo Carrillo cancellation on Wednesday, and drops Malibu Creek. Your alert catches the drop.

## When the email tends to land

Two patterns from our alerts.

First, 156 of the 329 (47%) fired at 8am Pacific. That is the ReserveCalifornia daily release. Each morning the date six months out opens, and any held or expired holds from the day before drop back into the pool. If you are watching a state park, 8am is the single most likely minute for your email.

Second, the other 173 alerts, the true cancellations, cluster on Tuesday (41) and Wednesday (40), and they cluster in the evening. The busiest hours were 5pm (15) and 8pm (14), then 4pm, 3pm and 6pm (13 each). People cancel after work, midweek, once they have looked at the forecast and the calendar. Friday is the dead day, 9 all month. If nothing has come back by Thursday night, the odds drop hard for this weekend, and you should be thinking about next weekend instead.

## What to do this week

Watch two or three campgrounds, not one. A Saturday at Crystal Cove alone is a long shot. A Saturday at Crystal Cove, Doheny or San Onofre, watched together over a few weekends, is a decent bet. The free plan covers one campground; Pro scans an area and checks every 5 minutes.
